Kind of... it's more like, there's a deep nihilism in people that Shadows seemed to feed on. And that nihilism beckoned to Nyx... helped along by some horrible misanthropic scientists trying to bend time with Shadows.

Nyx herself is... just Death. She's the inevitability of Death, asleep in the moon.
