This is it! Raven's chance to help the younger Ren experience his powers as a Persona user. They can fight together. Explore together. It's going to be great.

But the Metaverse is too unpredictable, and the Dark Hour fairly dangerous. So, naturally, the TV world is the best bet.

Thus, Raven leads his young compatriot to the Junes Electronics Department. How convenient that there's a little rack of glasses near the flatscreen TVs with a cute Teddie cutout nearby.

Raven glances at the selection. "You'll want to take one of these before we step inside. It'll help you see through the fog."

Ren takes it in, ears picking up how the sound of their footsteps change. "No. I mean like. In battle. I don't have a mask here."

"Well, all you really have to do is call out for your Persona and seize the tarot card that appears before you. No need to tear off a mask or fire a fake gun at your head." He guides Ren closer to the castle's entrance. "You can also use your weapons to deal direct damage to Shadows, although typically a Persona's skills are stronger."

Oh, right! Weapons. Ren takes out the daggers he got from Older Him, and a glowing toy short-sword. He's trying stuff! "Any tips?"

[fogboundcrow]

"Well, you'll want to try and sneak attack Shadows whenever possible. That will give you the opportunity to strike first. If all else fails, simply striking them to initiate a battle before they can strike you will prevent them from gaining an unfair advantage."

Raven places a hand on one of the doors. "Also, keep in mind that the floor layouts change each time you visit a dungeon. We'll be dealing with rather labyrinthine corridors once we step inside."

"Like a minimentos, got it," Ren nods, determined, by Goro's side. "I need to practice my flips..."

Have you seen the way bigger-him ambushes enemies? Super cool!

"How does ammo work here?"

"I suppose I ought to work on my acrobatics as well, but Magpie helped me get a head start when we navigated to the lower levels." They had to dodge trains. It was dangerous, but very exciting!

As they step inside, they find themselves in an elaborate hallway with pillars, sprawling red carpets, and huge archways. Raven doesn't make an immediate move, however. "Ammo should work identically to the Metaverse. You don't even need a real weapon." To prove his point, he draws his Proof of Justice.

Ren nods and draws his own model pistol. "Alright..." A generic-looking Shadow appears off in the distance, and suddenly, Ren's struck by an idea. He grins. "First one to defeat a Shadow wins!"

And off he goes, charging headlong into the castle.

"You're on!" Raven races behind him. "But do try to strike it before it sees you."

He'll give Ren the head start he deserves as the less experienced Persona user, but he'll want to move fast before the Shadow catches on.

"Yeah!" Ren shouts back. He's within striking distance of the fish-like...thing, so he holds out his hand -- and his heart. A tarot card flickers in front of him.

"Come--"

--he lunges for the card--

"--persona--"

--and it vanishes, whooshing away from his swipe.

Well...butterfingers. Ren stumbles forward, having thrown wayyyyy too much of himself into that grab, nearly bonking into the fish thing. Panicked, he jumps back and slices with his dagger, landing a clumsy normal hit on the thing.

Another one of those pesky Pesce attacks Akechi, but all it takes is a shot from his Proof of Justice to eradicate it, which is good because his goal is to draw the other Shadow's focus away from Ren.

"Hey! Are you ready to die?" He aims his blaster at the Shadow, but doesn't fire.

Shoot. Darnit. Ren forgot how good Goro is...he puffs out his cheeks at Raven getting the first kill. "Yeah!!" He backs up Raven's threat, going in for another lunge with his dagger. "Ready to be part of our fish fry?"

"Yes. Show it your fury!"

Raven knows better than to steal Ren's thunder again, but he can offer words of encouragement.

He'd even consider enemy debuffs, if it wouldn't undermine Ren's efforts. Instead, he'll keep an eye out and move to intercept any attempted attacks against Ren.

The fish thing tries to slash at him with its tail. Red covers Ren's vision. Goro got the first kill stupid fish things why is he cute and overleveled stupid fish thinks it can hurt me Wormwood where are you c'mon??

"RRAAAAHHHH!" Shots from his pistol ring out, almost covering his voice cracks. "Eat bait, dipfish!!!"

"Not bad at all!" Raven once again remains on the defensive, ready to intercept attacks aimed at Ren. All these hits should be taking their toll, however.

"Yeah!!!" Ren shouts, still seeing red. "Swim off, you finny punk! Time for a visit to the Dead Sea!"

More hits with his dagger -- slice, slice, slice -- he keeps going until --

"Gah!" His dagger slips through nothing instead of fishy hide. He manages to recover quickly, though.

"Well done." Raven flashes an encouraging smile, making his way over. "We'll need to down our enemies and do an All-Out attack to activate Shuffle Time, but I'm sure you'll get the hang of it. All you really need to do is adjust to summoning your Persona to start."

Deep breath in, deep breath out. That smile...he tries to return it. "Thanks." His persona...Ren cringes, tucking his daggers away absently. That was embarrassing...and he hopes he wasn't too, uh, unhinged when attacking. "Why didn't Wormwood show up?"

[fogboundcrow]

"That's a good question." Raven cups his chin in one hand, while keeping his blaster in the other. "Perhaps you could try looking inward and speaking to him?"

It's rather odd that he'd struggle, though. Is there some sort of internal strife at play?

Ugh, introspection...fiiiiine. Ren thinks really hard.

C'mon, Wormwood, where are you? That was totally embarrassing!! And in front of my first real friend!! In his home turf!! I'm thinking really hard about you! Wormwood Wormwood Wormwood!

(To the outside observer, Ren's making all kinds of funny faces as he tries too hard to speak to his inner self.)

"...Is everything all right?" Raven steps closer, a tiny frown across his lips. The faces Ren's making alone are certainly worrisome.

"Thinking is hard," Ren's nose scrunches up. "C'moooon Wormwood!! Come out, come out, wherever you are! I know you're in there!" He punches his own chest once, for emphasis.

[fogboundcrow]

"...So he's not even responding to you." A stoic look overtakes Raven. He remains close, but his eyes occasionally dart around them, just in case a Shadow approaches.

At least unlike Mementos, the Reaper won't chase them here.

"I wonder if there's some form of internal conflict that's preventing you from summoning properly."

That snaps Ren out of wracking his mind for Wormwood. "What kind of internal conflict?"

Perhaps, Wormwood -- right on time -- responds, it's because you're thinking too hard. I art thou. I can't speak over you.

"...Guess who just showed up in my head."

[fogboundcrow]

"...Did he raise any objections?"

Raven tries to keep calm, but goodness. Ren's little pout is annoyingly adorable. Who allowed him to be so charming?
