... ... ... ... ?
What is...?
I shouldn't... be awake...
[In the Velvet Room...]
[It's courteous of whatever's going on with Igor's plan here that Hamuko is dressed. She probably shouldn't even have a body... whatever she has going on now... did her body fall comatose without her? Did it die? If it was alive, she surely should be much older. ... ... ... Maybe that all doesn't really matter, right now. She's here, gifted a chance to be around others again. The pinboard catches her attention first, of course. Signs of other people... so many little notes, talking about multiple versions of the same person running around. That's... that's charming... that's fun. ...Even if the notes about Ken Amadas make her sad...]
Hmm... I don't see any other 'me' off the bat...
[She'll take a few minutes once given a pen and some pink paper to doodle a little version of herself, signed with her name and phone number, and add it to the corner of the pinboard.]
[Inaba, Central Shopping District]
[What a fun little town! A charming place... hey, isn't this the town she went to for the volleyball camp? She loved the accommodations, but it's so nice to actually wander the streets and see the little shops. This place is SO rural, Hamuko had never really visited a place this remote, even when jumping between foster homes.] Let's see... what's the good spot for the locals? [No point being a complete tourist shmuck!!]
[Shibuya, Underground Mall]
[Well, since nothing costs anything here... might as well get some cute new clothes, right? Who knows how long she'll be around here, and 'dreaming up' new outfits didn't seem to be a thing. No lucid dreaming here - somehow, Hamuko felt a lot happier with that in mind. Still... the fashion is so different!!]
I just want one cute orange top...!! Is orange out of style? Dang it...
[Iwatodai Dorms]
[Of all of the places she's been having fun goofing off and exploring in, the dorms... she couldn't quite get the courage to open the front. Not just yet.]
Not even Koromaru is out front right now. ...I've gotta apologize...

Gave a phone number, and lent an ear... neither of those were an 'awakening'. This guy must be from a different circumstance - which is only verified by Maruki's comment about how most people hadn't even heard of this.
"I would've loved if I could've gotten more Personas by flirting, that sounds like a lot more fun."
no subject
At Hamukoâs follow-up comment about flirting, Maruki froze.
Maruki turned red almost instantly. "Wh-what?! I wasnâtâŚ! I mean, I wasnât trying to flirt! I justâshe thought I was funny, I guess?" He could feel his face burning, the heat radiating all the way to his ears. He shifted awkwardly, one hand gripping the edge of his clipboard like it might keep him from melting into the earth.
For a moment, he wanted to sit there, thoroughly bemused, as his brain tried to process it all. "Oh my God⌠did I actually flirt with her?" He groaned quietly, resting his head in one hand. Considering the implications of the joke he had made.
"Katsuya-san really took the brunt of that whole negotiation, honestly but...actually wait-"
"That sounds a lot more fun?" he directly quoted her. "...you wouldâve flirted with other Shadows if youâd had the chance?"
no subject
Hamuko laughed even more at the thought of it.
"If Scathach started bantering though, definitely. She's a cutie. Vishnu? Oh you better believe it!"
no subject
A slow smile forms on his face at Hamuko's laughter. He appreciated it more than he realized.
He paused, the memory of negotiations with Demons resurfacing. âThough from what I understand, the Shadows in Mikage-cho and Sumaru City are often referred to as Demons. And Demons? They thrive on negotiations. But the more you alarm them, the quicker it turns into a fight which seems vastly different from my encounters in Shibuya's Mementos.â He furrowed his brow, thoughtfully tapping his clipboard with his pen. âThere was a reason for that distinction, I think? I donât remember it all too well.â The blush had started to fade as he made a quick note on his clipboard again.
The blush that had flared earlier had mostly faded.
Until it didnât.
When Hamuko rattled off the Personas sheâd be willing to flirt with, Maruki felt a little heat creeping back up. He didnât know the names Scathach or Vishnufirsthand- even after spearheading his way through all the levels of Mementos alone, but something about the mental image of flirtatious banter with mythological figures made his brain short-circuit for a second.
no subject
MithrasâHe stopped himself mid-thought, realizing the direction his mind had gone. His eyes widened slightly as he coughed into his fist and ran a hand over his mouth. âWow. This conversation took a whole other tangent.â
He looked back at Hamuko, equal parts sheepish and amused. âI guess youâre rubbing off on me already,â he said, chuckling softly. "Letâs just hope I donât end up negotiating with a Yaksini using compliments. Thatâd probably end with me getting viciously stabbed or punted across the nearest courtyard."
no subject
At least that made it a little easier to chat, for now. The first fork wasn't a massive one - in front of them was a distorted stack of old fashioned high school desks, and to the left...
A shimenawa. Hamuko hesitated before going forward, trying to see further past the rope for signs of Shadows... but all she could see was that stone path twisting and fading into more fog.
"Can you sense anything? I'm not really able to use navigational skills like that."
no subject
They keep walking ahead as Maruki promptly follows her around. He wasn't really the type to lead someone else, usually finding comfort in supporting someone (nor did he really trust himself when it came to such things...he could easily lead them off into a ditch elsewhere if he wasn't looking-)
He hesitates for a moment as he sees the distorted desks, the old sign posts that he's seen standing at other corners of Inaba. Such quiet.
The path felt suspended in the fog, the strange, dreamlike scenery stretching endlessly. Whoeverâs cognition had conjured this place was clearly powerfulâor perhaps their psyche was being influenced by an external phenomenon. He had seen cognitive distortions before, but this was on a different level..
He nearly dropped his clipboard and pen when Hamukoâs voice called out, snapping him out of his mental analysis. Realizing heâd fallen a few paces behind, he quickly caught up to her.
She stood at a fork. Directly ahead was the stack of desks, and to the left, a shimenawa rope stretched across the entrance of a twisting stone path that faded into more fog. The air around the rope felt... charged. Marukiâs brow furrowed as Hamuko spoke.
"Even with the glasses, we canât see much past this," he murmured, eyes narrowing at the shimenawa. âWhoever governs this place clearly doesnât want us here.â
"Let me see..."
He closes his eyes for a moment, drawing onto Azathoth as the persona stirs within him. When he opens them, his left pupil is outlined by a faint golden hue as he looks directly into the fog.
"There doesn't seem to be any immediate...wha-!" His eyes widen, finding some sort of disparity in the way he could almost feel something constricting into the air. Like an existence which stubbornly kept out of sight. âI can sense something,â he said, his tone more urgent. âI canât see it, but itâs close. Closer than Iâd expect for something keeping this low a profile.â
Maruki blinked, and his eyes returned to normal. He clutched his clipboard and carefully tucked his pen into the âvâ of his hoodie. There was no point in taking notes mid-battleânot unless they survived long enough to reflect on the experience.
âThe shimenawa may be functioning as a gate,â he said softly, glancing at Hamuko. âOr a barrier. Iâm not sure whatâs beyond it, but... I donât think it wants to be disturbed.â
He adjusted his stance, his expression serious. âIâm ready whenever you are.â
no subject
No luck - there was a firm, solid block, the physical shimenawa expanding to completely and wholly block progress forward. They weren't evil spirits (as far as Hamuko knew) but... with Maruki's assessment, evidenced by the glow to his eyes, she knew there was something beyond the shimenawa.
Was it there to keep those spirits in?
"...This person might have more in common with me than I thought," she remarked. "Let's be extremely careful. This is only supposed to be a memory or a dream, right? But we might not go all the way in if this is meant to seal something away," Hamuko explained, lining up the shoddy naginata blade with the rope. "Ready for a battle?"
no subject
Before he could fully process it, Hamuko turned to him.
Maruki let out a soft huff of a laugh. âI think Iâm more ready to face whateverâs behind this rope with a peashooter than I am to hear anything else coming out of your mouth,â he teased lightly, shaking his head.
With that, he instinctively backed away a step, his gaze flicking from the rope to the fog beyond. His expression grew more serious. He could feel Azathoth stirring deep within himâthe Personaâs presence almost overwhelming, as if it were trying to reach out and grasp the unseen force beyond the barrier.
no subject
With the swift slice, the barrier dissolved immediately and something felt freed - even Hamuko realized it in time to not get caught off guard by the pack of Shadows pouncing on them.
She winced at them - eugh, floating balls with mouths and giant tongues?? Shadows never stopped being weird and gross - but she didn't get a sense of imminent danger from them beyond what was to be expected from dangerous Shadows in general.
So Hamuko pulled her Evoker from its holster - mercifully it had not been taken from her - and pressed it to her temple. Messiah stirred in her even before she pulled the trigger, before her head snapped from the shock and the euphoric rush of unleashing her inner self realized. Morning Star - Messiah raised an arm heavenward, and from a light above, Almighty damage practically exploded downwards.
no subject
His mind flashed back to another time, another person. That Ren Amamiya. He had pressed an Evoker to his head too.
Summoned Raoulâthat ghostly phantom.
And then the bullets had rained down. Maruki clenched his fists as the memory burned into him for just a second longer than heâd like.
Not now, Maruki. Focus. He shook his head, dispelling the past from his mind. Its been months since that attack and he's fought far tougher enemies before so why should he be-
Hamukoâs Messiah materialized in a burst of radiant energy. The sheer light from above was blinding for a moment as her Persona raised its arm heavenward, summoning the full force of Morning Star. A pillar of light exploded downward, disintegrating all of the grotesque, floating Shadows on the spot.
"My god."
Maruki couldnât help but gape for a second. There was even some black goo from one of the shadows that made its way onto his hoodie before it outright disappeared.
"...I see what you meant by carrying me." He evenly says, his mind still catching up with how he swore he saw literal stars as he tried to get away from the attack.
no subject
As the battle faded, an oppressive heaviness weighed down over them. Hamuko was left almost breathless, pressing a hand to her chest - not for inability to breathe, but for the painfully familiar feeling.
The weight of Nyx's sheer presence crushing them to the ground with dread. The terror of realizing their imminent death. Climbing the stairs knowing that they would likely never be descending them ever again. Staring into the alien heart of the creature in the moon, feeling in every cell of her body the promise of death.
...Half of her stamina was gone... wicked away by this forest, this grave - the only reason to be in here was to die.
"Hohh... are you... are you okay?" Hamuko asked, regaining her composure.
no subject
What the hell... Why now?
He squeezed his eyes shut, grounding himself as heâd done countless times before after grueling battles in Mementos. A brief mental acuity check. He slowed his breath. In. Out. Measured. Steady. He was good at keeping a level head in moments like these, but even so, his mind still felt like it was drifting.
When he finally straightened up, he glanced over at Hamuko. He barely registered her outstretched hand or her expression of concern.
Maruki immediately took note of the pale tint to her skin and the tension in her frame. She was drained too.
Marukiâs clipboard had already slipped from his fingers, clattering to the foggy ground. Without hesitation, he rested a steadying hand on her shoulder as if worried she might trip, his gaze soft but full of concern.
âIâm... okay. Physically,â Maruki said slowly. His voice was steady but tinged with uncertainty. âBut my spirit feels... drained. Hollow. Like whatever energy we had, this place is sapping it away.â
His eyes widened slightly as a sudden realization struck him. Heavy Almighty attack. His mind flashed back to that blinding light Messiah had summoned. The devastation of Morning Star. Almighty energy demanded quite a lot of stamina and vitality before but Hamuko-san wouldn't have landed the attack if she couldn't handle it. Hell, Maruki has used those attacks too and he never-
âWaitâwhat about you?â Marukiâs hand tightened just slightly on her shoulder. He searched her eyes, the fatigue still weighing on his chest like an anvil. âYou just unleashed one hell of an attack too. Are you really okay?â
no subject
...Physical touch helped. The warmth of another hand, a kind gesture from a stranger. Concern and the warmth of that worry in their tone.
People really were wonderful.
"I felt that too. I think-- bah... it felt a little too much like a few things I've experienced before. The person that went in here.... they didn't expect to ever come out again. It is a very horrible feeling," she admitted, dabbing at her eye. "I'll have to be a lot more conservative with my stamina use, though. Hah."

Messiah meant sacrifice. Messiah meant letting go of the world for the greater good-
His hand twitched under her touch, as if alluding to the fact that he wanted to let go- not wanting to push her boundaries.
So when he felt her tremble he steeled his nerves and kept his hand there.
2/2
God, the one stranger who looked at him with a clear lens was being forced into such pain. To be so hyper aware of her own situation that she empathised with this place-
When Hamuko dabbed at her eye and mentioned conserving her stamina, something inside Maruki hardenedânot with anger, but with unshakable resolve. The girl who had just obliterated Shadows with Messiahâs almighty power now stood here, hyper-aware of her vulnerability and still full of empathy for whatever had created this place.
He couldnât stand the thought of her suffering any more than she already had.
âHamuko-san,â Maruki began, his voice soft but insistent. âItâs greatly admirable that you can keep your head and heart so clear, especially in a place like this. Not many people could walk through something so heavy and still find compassion for the pain around them. Thatâs a rare kind of strength.â
His dark eyes softened, filled with the same care and empathy that had made him such a beloved counselor at Shujin Academy. âBut thereâs absolutely no way I can allow you to bring yourself harm like this. Are you really sure you want to go to such lengths for a stranger?â
no subject
She had given so much of herself for everyone, even people she had never met and would never know.
And this man... therapist or not, he had a genuine kindness to him. The kind of sincerity and compassion she believed in fighting for.
"It took me off guard, but I'll be okay. I promised I would keep you safe while you researched, so I will."
no subject
Marukiâs expression softened, but the concern didnât fade. Slowly, he let go of her shoulder, fingers trembling slightly before falling back to his side. He looked away, casting his gaze over the fog-laden trees. His research, his lifeâs workâremoving pain and suffering from peopleâs livesâhad been born from a similar place. A desperate hope to protect those he cared about from the same pain that had once crushed him.
But even knowing that... seeing Hamuko like this was almost too much.
âIf you say you can handle it,â he began slowly, âthen all I can do is trust you." His eyes returned to hers, and he forced a small smileâa little tired, a little unsure, but genuine nonetheless. âIâm very grateful to you, Hamuko-san. Truly.â
For a moment, he paused, as if weighing his next words. Then, almost as a last attempt to ease some of her burden, he extended his hand formally. âI realize I havenât properly introduced myself yet. Iâm Dr Takuto Maruki, formerly a counselor at Shujin Academy and now well- a researcher.â There was a slight hesitation before he added, âMaybe youâve heard of me... or my work.â
It just wasn't right to keep taking advantage of her kindness without even sharing his name in return.
no subject
"I think I saw your name on the board. And a few negative comments," she laughed a little lightly. "But nothing that explained your research. I wouldn't mind hearing more after we find a good stopping point here," Hamuko added. Obviously if there was something harmful going on, she'd want to find out - but multiple timelines, multiple possibilities, she didn't know what this man's experience was yet.
With that same smile, that same willingness to hear and understand, she met his hand and returned the handshake.
"Don't hesitate to press forward more here. Even if this challenged me here, if someone currently here created a place like this, I want to be ready and able to be there for them too. So it's good training for both of us."
no subject
And if he was honest with himself, part of him had been expecting the worst. Maybe even hoping sheâd walk away in disgust. It would have made things easier.
It didn't stop him from being pinned down by the crimes he didn't commit. Or committed them in another world. Just like he never had a son but he did feel responsible for taking care of him nonetheless.
"My research...its pretty simple in principle," he admits with a sheepish tone. "But it seems my other selves across the multiverse had their own... interpretations. I donât know if I agree with all of them, but the intentions were likely the same."
With a small sigh, Maruki reached up and adjusted the hood of his hoodie. He let it fall away from his head, revealing his face fully at last. His dark hair was slightly tousled from the fog and sweat, and the cat ears drooped slightly from where they had been folded into the fabric.
âIâm not planning to leave this place without answers,â he said with a bit more steel in his tone, his kind eyes sharpening just slightly with determination. âI have a hypothesis about why this place works the way it does⌠and if Iâm right, itâs not pretty.â He hesitated as he turned back for a moment and quickly bent down to grab his clipboard from the ground. Dusting off the dust from the pinned papers, his lips pulled still. "This place has a way of getting into your head. Digging into thoughts you might not even realize you had."
no subject
"That would make sense just given my experience in the past twenty minutes," Hamuko hummed in agreement, though after a pause she tilted her head in thought. "...But then again, I never really had the time to process a lot of what I went through most recently, so it's not easy to say."
The months after the Promised Day were too much of a haze of no one quite remembering, and of being... SO tired. So, bone-deep tired... because she was only there thanks to her promise to reunite for Graduation Day.
After an unsteady beat, Hamuko tapped the tip of her shoe against the ground in a thoughtful fidget.
"So this place both mirrors the subconscious and affects it? ...Why do Shadows congregate in here, then? I'd thought that they were tied with Nyx, but..." trailing off, Hamuko frowned, tapping her chin. "...They did say that Shadows existed and were being studied long before anything about Nyx was found... but Nyx has existed for all this time, alongside life on Earth. How detached is this place from Nyx's influence...?"
no subject
âWell, if we consider Carl Jungâs theory of the Collective Unconscious, I wouldnât necessarily tie all Shadows to Nyxâs influence,â he began, his voice soft but confident. âNyx, from what Iâve gathered, was a powerful being with her own unique impact on humanityâs psyche. But the Shadows we see here may not have been conjured by her directly. I donât exactly see the goddess of darkness showing up again anytime soon to string humanity together for its doom.â He tried to soften the grim topic with a faint chuckle, though it only partially masked the tension beneath.
Maruki flipped to the topmost page of his clipboard, scanning his notes. âFrom what I have discerned so farâafter hearing about Nyx being sealed enough times to almost give me gray hairs,â he added with a half-joking smileââitâs possible this place functions similarly to Mementos- another cognitive phenomenon now relevant in our Shibuya. All of these phenomena seem to be influenced by cognition. That is, by perceptionâeither an individualâs or, more importantly, a collective groupâs common belief.â
He paused for a moment, considering how best to explain it. âTake the studio we just walked into earlier who have a public figure they look up to, for example. If someoneâor an entire groupâperceives them a certain way, whether positively or negatively, that perception can manifest here. Itâs not necessarily tied to logic or truth, but rather the emotional weight and intensity of those beliefs.â
Marukiâs gaze turned more serious as he continued. âItâs similar to the way some people Iâve interviewed here talk about the fog. Some believe itâs poisonous, which is why they avoid investigating it. That belief, driven by fear and anxiety, could be keeping the fog in placeâclouding their vision both physically and mentally.â
He stopped for a moment, his brow furrowing as a new thought struck him. âThereâs also other forms of anxiety that stems in the forms of Hypochondria."
"Its where an individual who believes themselves to be sick can end up actually turning sick because of that. A trick of the mind. If we keep looking onward maybe we could...â
Marukiâs voice trailed off slightly, a flicker of uncertainty crossing his face. âBut as much as I can theorize, thereâs still a lot I donât understand."
no subject
If it was ever in doubt, now it couldn't be. Stated outright why she felt so deeply connected to this place.
"This grave... I think the person who created it felt as though they were sealing something terrible, too. I don't know if we'll find out what, since this isn't the actual site. But I say it's better to know the dangers than to live with your head in the sand."
no subject
âYou sealed away...death itself?â he finally murmured, his voice almost a whisper. That's what she meant by throwing herself at it. It wasnât disbelief, oh no he had his suspicionsâhe had long since stopped doubting the incredible when it came to people like Hamukoâbut a mixture of awe and sorrow. He slowly set the clipboard away from himself, unable to focus on his notes.
âYou really did die in your world."
He finally looked up- attempting to keep a small smile, not wanting to add gasoline to the fire with dissecting everything she just spilled right now. âI- I don't understand,â he said softly, his voice empty of anger. âWhat happened to you...itâs one of the most selfless acts anyone could ever do. And yet, the costââ He broke off, running a hand through his dark hair. âTo live knowing others are free, but at the expense of your own life... itâs a tragedy no one should have to endure.â
This place is not going to do her any good either.
"I am sorry for pointing us to this place," his expression drooped. "Living with your head in the sand or what not is a different ordeal but I would honestly much prefer that over bringing you here. Hah.." his sentence ended off with a weak chuckle. "Hm."
Probably a little pathetic to admit that out loud, huh? Still- "If you want we can retrace our steps to the entrance again. I am sure it wouldn't be too difficult."
no subject
With a small nod, keeping steady as she always did as the leader...
"I know what to expect, now. And I know now what sort of pacing we should do to not get overwhelmed by Shadows. What do you say?"
