[EVENT] Memory Tapes
On the morning of November 21st, denizens in the Velvet Room will awake to a message on their phones or by their bedsides in an envelope. Perhaps even on their computer screens.
Greetings! If you've received this message, then you've been selected as a participant in a new activity to strengthen bonds within this community.
In order to facilitate connections with your fellow residents, we advise you to watch this video. Watch it and return the tape to its rightful owner. If you lacked the means to watch VHS tapes before, we have provided you with the necessary equipment.
Failure to do so may put your own memories at risk. Do not be selfish, lest you find yourself struggling to recall crucial moments of your life. You have no way of knowing which memories have been shared, so ask yourself if it is worth the risk to selfishly hoard another's secrets.
They will soon find a VHS tape, with a case that gives off a soft, blue glow to symbolize its importance. If they lack a TV or VCR, they will find one in their living space.
What they do is up to them, but they should heed the warning, if they value their own memories.

Igor does not have an account. Ren is pinging no one. But that's not the fucking point.
2: the velvet room
Perhaps you're already in the Velvet Room in the early afternoon, and are able to witness Ren striding in through the Tokyo door, grim-faced, pulling his gun as he approaches Igor's desk. Perhaps you're unlucky enough to arrive just in time to see him wordlessly pointing the gun right at Igor's evil, smug fucking face and pulling the trigger.
The gun fires, with the deafening bang and the hot-metal smell and everything, but if there's a bullet, it vanishes before it can touch the master of the Velvet Room. Igor himself has actually stopped smiling for a moment, in order to give Ren a look of mild disapproval.
Then Elizabeth and Theodore close in. Elizabeth raps Ren sharply on the shoulder with the spine of her book, and he flies backwards, through the door and back into Tokyo, still holding his gun and looking profoundly unsurprised about the entire series of events. You may find him there, as well, sprawled on the concrete or getting back to his feet.

He's investigating the nearest tape, holding it up to the morning light and pressing the little button to lift the flap up and down, exposing the band of magnetic tape in what might be a dangerous way.

You have worked side-by-side in flourishing cases- the fact that there is a tape out there that has put you on fucking blast is probably not the worst thing you have been through.
Akira can only hope that whoever gets his tape somehow never manages to locate him. He hopes his tapes somehow landed up in a ditch and they stayed there because right now he will take that over any other damn scenario that could stir up to the point that he won't be able to time travel back with individuals who are somehow more deranged than him.
He has a plan.
He's going to follow through with it.
"Phew, okay!" Akira heaves a deep breath as he once again checks the fake sling on his left arm- placed to make sure others lower their guard around him which actually held a small shield made of metal derived from Seigfried's shield just in case he needs to block attacks from insane persona users (cough a certain robot cough cough). He even has a pair of sunglasses resting on the bridge of his nose as he hums. "Just go to velvet room, don't try to kill Igor- write down any extra information from the board then come back-!"
He opens the door, a nervous smile playing on his lips as he desperately tried not thinking about what others may have seen on their tapes. "Easy enough-"
He raises his head and at that exact moment, he sees a body now flying towards him as his eyes widen and he tries to shut the door- only for the body to break and crash through the velvet door and perfectly bash into the bridge of his nose.
Akira barely has time to blink before the flying body slams into him with all the grace of a runaway freight train. His back hits the ground with a resounding thud, sunglasses askew, fake sling tangled up around his neck, and a distant ringing in his ears.
For a moment, he just lays there, stunned, staring up at the ceiling with all the existential regret of someone who’s rethinking every life choice that led to this exact moment.
“…Get off me,” he groans, voice dripping with exasperation. He shoves at the weight on top of him—his supposed doppelgänger—and finally manages to wriggle out from beneath him. Sitting up with a grimace, he rubs the bridge of his nose, wincing. “Great. You managed to break the one thing I had left in this godforbidden mess of the world— maybe next time just have the decency to fucking SHOOT me!”
He adjusts his fake sling with a huff, muttering under his breath as he untangles it from his neck. Akira pushes his askew sunglasses back into place, glaring at the other Aki...ren (whatever) sprawled on the ground beside him. “Do I even want to know what kind of circus act you just escaped from? Or do you just make a habit of using yourself as a human missile?”

Grocery shopping
Ren is out getting some supplies and apparently today isn't his lucky day because there's apparently a large sale on garlic so there's more than usual. Usually he can avoid the garlic section by avoiding that area unless he has to, but there's an unusual amount.
Right now, he's lean a little against his cart and trying not to throw up in the store. Sure it's just cognitions but it's a matter of digity and pride.

Akira sighs as he runs his hands over his face and looks at the two tapes now resting on his study table. He's already flung one through the window only for it to manifest while he was having breakfast again because why the hell would Igor make his life easier? Its almost a hellscape at this point.
He has already streamed the tapes once and well- one of them was an easy answer. The only problem was that despite having the solution outright front and centre- he's already dreading the image of the robotic Akechi who he had seen in that tape and knew exactly who that belonged to.
Locked to Gorobo (B)
Hell of course that was who he thought he was. There are no other robotic versions of Goro Akechi with their crumpling mothers- and he knows enough to know this belongs to the only Akechi he detests with all his being.
Still, while his expression had crumpled a little as he glanced at the footage- he also couldn't act as if any of this surprising. He has seen it first hand after all. The despair in his own Akechi to the horrors of experiencing the death of a mother at a young age.
Hell, its one of the few things he understood a little too well.Just destroy it. No point in checking.
He pasted the paper at the bottom of the box he was going to mail to the specific address saved on his phone. In meticulous fashion he ensured to wear gloves just in case Gorobo could detect fingerprints through his laser eyes or something to making sure he printed the paper just in case his handwriting somehow gave that robot some weird flashbacks. He's sure he's never written anything in front of him but he doesn't want to take his chances.
Once he's sure he's happy with the box, he takes one quick glance at the postal company and decides to do what's best. Falcon will know what to do after that.

Once he's done delivering the tape you could find Akira walking around in a fake sling- maybe having an icecream or just leaving the building of the SIU headquarters after ensuring he had access to all CCTV footages on his smart watch placed on the wrist of his "bandaged" arm.
You could even find him in mementos- slinging away at monsters in anger but let's not make haste, shall we? Please discuss in OOC!

He knew it. He fucking knew this asshole was bad news, and the tape he just watched confirmed all his suspicions. Noble as his intentions may have been at first- saving people- he can take over people's bodies. He can control them by having their picture, he fucking knew it.

He fumes as he looks at the perfectly fine tape, despite breaking it in two moments ago. He tried throwing it out, but it just reappeared, just like the message earlier said. He needs to return it, apparently.

He's briefly distracted when the doorbell rings, and when he opens, it's a package for him. And inside...

He almost agrees with the message. He almost wishes he hadn't.
He's horribly, unnaturally still by the time the tape ends, his fans loudly blowing air as he- fuck, he doesn't know- he's- he hates this. He hates this. He wants to fucking cry, and scream, and-
His mom. His mom.
Why this memory? Why, why, why would they unearth- why would they fucking-
A horrible, glitchy noise leaves his throat, his fingers digging into his arms- hard enough that he can hear the metal protesting and whining. He hates this fucking place. He hates it so much. He's going to kill Shido, everyone in the conspiracy, and Igor and his guard dogs.
Someone saw this. And he doesn't even know who it was.

He doesn't move for a very, very long time after that. His mind keeps spinning and spinning and spinning, catching itself in a neverending loop of fury, of horror, terror, every negative emotion he is capable of feeling.
His eyes snap towards Kira's tape after what could either be minutes, or hours. It feels like hours- but his internal clock tells him it has only been around 15 minutes. He's received other tapes too, but this one-
Fuck. He's not meeting with Kira. He refuses. Returning the tapes to everyone else is gonna suck enough as is, but Kira-
No.
He doesn't even really know where Kira lives, but he's not meeting with him. The box, however, does give him an idea. He grabs the tape, shoves it carelessly into the box- he needs to get out anyway, he can't fucking stay here right now. He needs to- he needs to do something. The images of his mom flit through his mind and FUCK-
He can't cry, but he can scream, and he can mistreat boxes that contain tapes. By the end, the box is more like a sad heap of cardboard forcibly ducktaped to the tape in question, and if he had a throat to feel raw, it probably would. He carries it with him as he goes out, angry footsteps echoing through Inaba. When he arrives in the Velvet Room, neither Igor nor his attendants are there- probably for the best, because despite getting his ass kicked earlier, he's not sure he could hold back from trying to fight them.
He throws the box down near the conspiracy board, glaring at it, before he pulls up the network.
"Your tape is in the Velvet Room. Stay the fuck away from me, Kira, you body-snatching piece of shit."
With that, he storms out once more, the image of his mother's dead body still on his mind, mixing with the grim details of Kira's tape into a cocktail of horror and fury.

Despite the message he received in the morning, Kou hasn't found any tapes in his posession. Not that he wants any, but he received the message, so clearly, he's got something to do with all this bullshit.
He hopes it was a fluke. Somehow, he knows it wasn't. He hopes nobody received a 'tape' of his memories, but...
Exhaustion pulls at him. Why this shit. All he wants to do is roll over and go back to sleep, but he probably shouldn't leave this. Who knows what kind of memories he stands to lose? He can't lose them, memories are all he has-
After struggling with himself for hours on end, he finally manages to post a message on the network.
"hey. if you suspect you've got one of my tapes, you can find me in"
He almost writes Leblanc, but... he can't. He fucking can't. All this memory shit is making him think of Goro, and the smell of Leblanc would only...
He inhales deeply on the cigarette in his mouth.
"shibuya. i'll be in bikkuri boy, the diner."

Indeed, about half an hour later, Kou has managed to drag himself into the diner, and order a surprise sando- although it's just kind of sitting there, really. Kou himself seems to just be kind of sitting there as well, fiddling around with his phone, but he looks bored. And tired.

But he felt it.
Azathoth was here, watching, waiting, its tendrils weaving through his thoughts like a shadowy mist.
"You won’t find it," a voice murmured in his mind. Not quite his voice, but not entirely foreign either. It was heavy, like the weight of his own doubt made manifest.
“No,” Maruki whispered aloud, shaking his head. “I know it’s here. I just… I’m tired, that’s all.” He gripped the phone again and forced himself to look through the whole network post. He's seeing the profile pictures and hell- why aren't they more clear? Everyone has the same face...you would think they would use something distinct to differentiate themselves.
The names blurred again, even more violently this time, shifting into unrecognizable symbols.
The letters rearranged themselves into gibberish, mocking him.
"Stop," Maruki hissed under his breath, clutching his head. His mind felt like it was being unraveled, each thought picked apart and rearranged by Azathoth’s insidious grasp. “It’s just stress. Just stress. Hell, what even is the network? Mixi kept things so simple...”
He set the phone down for the last time, leaning back in his chair with a defeated sigh. His gaze drifted to the ceiling, where faint shadows danced in the edges of his vision. His head throbbed, the beginnings of a migraine clawing its way into his temples as the equations of his previous experiment blurred with the heartbreaking images of the tape he had seen countless times. Dissecting each little detail. Each word. The moles-
Maruki glanced at the phone again, and this time he swore he saw something move.
The screen was blank now, yet it flickered faintly, like a heartbeat. A single tendril of black mist curled around the edge of the device, only to vanish the moment he blinked. His breath caught in his throat.
"This is pointless," the voice whispered again, low and resonant, laced with disdain. "You’re wasting time. There are other ways to reach him, aren’t there? Other avenues."
Maruki clenched his fists, trying to ignore it, but the thought wormed its way into his brain. The voice wasn’t wrong. He didn’t need the number—not if he really wanted to find Kou. He knew enough about him already. He could track him, if it came to that.
"I will just deliver the tape to him through the tentacles. Or wait for a coincidence."
"Don't you think he's a wonderful subject for your therapy, Maruki-san?"
Maruki's jaw tightens as he runs his bare fingers on the barebones of a report he had organized- a breakthrough for one of the residents in Rumi's charity center. He knows they are all cognition but- did it matter? This research was still important to him.
His gaze flickers over to a dustbin in the corner. There was a piece of paper crumpled into a ball, a report that Maruki...eventually disposed of. He has the barebones of his new idea but something feels off.
“No,” Maruki said, his voice firm despite the tremor in his hands. “I know what you are suggesting and that's...invasive. That’s not right.”
"And letting him walk away is? Letting him slip through your fingers when you could lose all your memories?"
"I will just talk to him seperately-"
"He will be hostile."
"..."
"Like sparrow. Like others. They will always misunderstand our intentions."
Maruki pursed his lips.
"And besides...if this works- Rumi would be happy too, you know?"
Maruki’s chest tightened.
He buried his face in his hands, trying to block out the sound of it. But Azathoth wasn’t just in his ears. It was in his thoughts, in his perception, twisting everything it touched.

Hey everyone, I need to talk about something weird that just happened. Like a lot of you, I woke up to find one of those glowing blue tapes and that message. You know, the one about "sharing" and "not hoarding memories." Yeah, that.
I’ve already ended up with two tapes, but they don’t seem to have anything to do with me... at least, not yet. Still, I want to stress how serious this is. Memories are a huge part of who we are, and messing with them—well, it’s not something we should take lightly.
That said, I’ve got a small (but important!) favor to ask: if you somehow got a tape involving me, can you please bring it to my lab in Odaiba? I’m... missing everything after Christmas Eve, and I feel like I’m flying blind here.
You don’t have to worry about your private memories being leaked or judged. Whatever’s on there stays between us.

Well the fact that he works for Shido puts a sour taste in his mouth and yet a part within him isn't surprised considering how things turned out for Sparrow. His brain doesn't react to the new information spilled out in those two new tapes as explosively as he had originally anticipated when he first saw them. Its as if he could already predict the ending within it.

I'm afraid I don't quite understand how this helps with bonding. If there's a risk of losing memories, doesn't that cause a sense of pressure that wouldn't be conducive for it?

He dived into the tape of course.
Weaved through its detail. The jazz-jin. The two were close...really close. This Akechi resembled the Akechi he knew in almost all timelines- cutthroat and to the point. Bitter but reasonable. And for some reason the Ren (which also narrowed down that this was a Ren- not an Akira which wasn't a helpful statistic) didn't want to go through with the infiltration but chose to stick around Akechi. As if making up for lost time.
It felt too damn familiar.
Who was he supposed to deliver the tape too? The Akechi or the Ren?
The question quickly answers itself the moment the Akechi gets up and turns away which leaves Akira, now floating within the hidden signals that made the tape what they are but unlike how he could usually interact with the environment now he was just...a ghost. Fucking Igor.
When Akechi turned, the scene around the Ren darkened as if the spotlights shining on a particular person had turned off- indicating the person left the main scene.
So an Akechi.
Conflicted. Confused. Worried. Each twitch on his face could be easily read through. He read him like a fucking book.
Well. There's only one way to resolve this issue.

He...didn't want to step foot here. The place held too many fresh memories, too many variables and spirals that went out of control. It was something that baralled right through him, nearly making him shake to the core.
But he needed to return this tape to Akechi. Whoever he was.
If his hands stopped fucking shaking that is.
He grits his teeth and decides to tuck the tape back in his bag, zips it and tosses it across the counter before vaulting over it. Maybe a part of him is hoping there's a Sojiro here who will immediately scold him for that but of course...no one's here. Its just 9 am but it was also the perfect time to look through all the Akechis and Rens and Akiras who walked out of here in their infinite supply of attic rooms. Kira never personally trusted it nor does he think he ever will.
He turns around and immediately grabs a jar of Cuban coffee beans and gets to work.
